Information regarding the new Star Rebate filing for 2017

Beginning in 2016, all new home owners will receive their STAR discount as a rebate from the State of New York, rather than as an exemption on their school taxes. If you’ve previously had a STAR discount administered by the Town Assessor’s Office, your STAR discount will continue to be an exemption on your taxes.

Shenendehowa Central School district is discussing extending the veteran’s exemption, available on town and county taxes, to school taxes in their school district. A FAQ, including a timeline of future meetings, can be found here:

http://www.shenet.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/The-Alternative-Veterans-Q-A.pdf.”

New legislation requires all homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption to register with the NYS Tax Department in order to receive the exemption in 2014 and subsequent years.  All basic STAR recipients will receive registration instructions by mail.

The 2016 Final Town Tax Roll has been completed and is available for inspection in the Town Clerk’s Office during regular hours. The information is also available on the County's website: http://www.saratogacountyny.gov/2016-final-assessment-rolls/

Scroll down to the Town of Waterford link and press the enter key and you will have access to the entire Final Roll. To find a particular property, owner, or address, use the “Find” box. Many residents feel it is important to know the assessments on their properties.

If you need help reading the Roll or understanding its abbreviations, the Assessor is usually available to help (call for an appointment: 235-9907).

Using either of these methods can help you decide if your assessment is fair or needs review. If review is your choice, go to http://www.tax.ny.gov/pdf/publications/orpts/grievancebooklet.pdf or telephone your Assessor.
