Picture My Park Days

“Take only pictures, leave only footprints” is the guiding ethic for our 2018 photo series of Picture My Park Days and year-end photo contest at Peebles Island State Park.  The first Picture My Park Day will be Saturday, January 6, 2018 (rain date of January 13^th).  The day will kick off with an introductory presentation at 1:00pm in the Visitor Center at Peebles Island State Park prior to a hike of the Island. The Park will be in its winter form, so please dress appropriately.

There will be three additional dates to capture the Park in all seasons - tentatively targeted for March (Spring), June (Summer), and October (Fall).

In December, we will hold a year-end photo exhibit and contest in the Visitor Center. Each photographer will be able to exhibit up to four photos for a nominal fee of $10. A three-person panel will select the contest winners. Photos entered must be taken in the Park during 2018 but are not limited to the four Picture My Park Days.

Much has been said about the value of wilderness and of spending time in it. John Muir, co-founder of the Sierra Club, stated, “In every walk with Nature one receives far more than he seeks.”  Throughout the Program, we will emphasize ethical issues related to photographing wildlife and their habitat.

Peebles Island has the advantage of being close to urban populations, yet having a decidedly woodsy feel. It has an important and varied history, including a Mohican village established prior to the arrival of Europeans, Revolutionary War earthworks, farming, industrial use, and even summer camps. Today, the Park is popular with local urban dwellers looking for a peaceful place to walk.
